1989 Evinrude 8 hp - Runs great then dies after about 3 hours of trolling

My 1989 Evinrufe 8 hp starts up and runs great but after about 3 or 4 hours of trolling she sometimes just dies. It takes me about 5 minutes and several pulls to get her to start up again. Once started, she runs great again. I've had this same problem occasionally on my 1986 Johnson 8 hp (essentially the same motor). I'm in Colorado so the lakes I fish are typically at about 8500 - 9000 feet altitude. Anyone have any ideas on what the cause could be and how to correct it? Could this be a vapor lock on the fuel pump? if so, would pouring cool water on the fuel pump help? Except for this annoying characteristic, both motors run great. Thanks

i iwould suspect plug fouling from extended slow speed trolling. do you give it a " run" now and then while trolling ? does it smoke quite a bit once you get it to start after a stall out? maybe try a hotter plug if you dont do much wot running. jmo

I would ensure that my carb's gas mixture was set properly. Perhaps it has not been set for your altitude, and should be. You can do this with these instructions.

Also, as stated above, whenever you are trolling for any period of time, it is recommended that you open up the throttle and let her rip for a few minutes or so to burn out the carbon crud that can start to form, especially on your spark plugs.

Thanks nwcove and OptsyEagle! I'll open her up occasionally during trolling and check the carb adjustment. I greatly appreciate your help.
