Hi,
I have a 1989 evinrude 70hp outboard and it is not running correctly. it will idle decently well but will only run about 5mph at full throttle. I cleaned all 3 carburetors yesterday and they were pretty gunked up. at wot it will rev up for a second when I give it a spray of starting fluid or even pump the ball a bit. It has good compression and spark and the gas is coming from a clean external tank with a 50:1 ratio. any ideas?

thanks

sound s like fuel delivery problems ...

what level of cleaning... did you reach on the carbs ??

full take appart , carb cleaner all over the innards , passages, HS jets etc... with compressed air at the end to blow out any residue etc...

I used an entire can of carb cleaner on them to get them as clean as I could. bottom carb jet was completely clogged beforehand. there was a good amount of some milky type substance in the 3 bowls, looked almost like salt mixed with gas.
there is a new fuel pump on it (part # 438559) and new electric choke. I am beginning to think that one of these is the problem. the electric choke has a red lever on the side that will stall the motor if rotated but does not seem to send gas to the carbs when pushing the key in on the control box.

The electric primer is a valve.----It is not a pump.------When cranking you push the key in.----The valve opens and fuel at pressure is put directly into the intake air stream.-----This fuel bypasses the carburetor metering circuits.----The question for you to answer.----Did you remove and clean the high speed jet ( orifice plug ) from the bowl of the carburetor ?----This plug is about 5/8" long and is threaded in with 1/4-20NC thread.

Open up and soak carbs in solvent before detailed cleaning.

Spent the day on the water troubleshooting. Turns out the bottom carb is the problem. The main jet that sprays into the inner walls of the carb is not spitting gas out. I sprayed it completely with carb fluid and the fluid can get thru but it does not happen while the motor is running. When i spray starting fluid into it while running the engine runs as it should.

Sounds like the high speed jet ( orifice plug ) is plugged.----Remove carburetor.------Remove carburetor bowl.----Remove jet from carburetor bowl and inspect clean it.----Caution----If no fuel goes into the bottom cylinder then no oil goes in either.

Thanks racerone, i never would have considered that. Is the part removable? I tried to figure a way to get it out but i did not want to break anything. The diagram did not display how to remove it

Yes, they are removable. A screwdrive that fits down the hole will get them out. Flat blade. No side taper to the blade.

if you can't remove the jet or remove it from fear of damage use a a fine mono filament 2-4 pounds should do .. gently ream out the crud followed with another blast of carb cleaner or compressed air

a very small wire 22-26 ga could do also but do not damage the jet
