I have a 1989 evinrude 25 hp outboard motor that I am having problems with the lower unit. I was told that the oil was drained when i got it a few days ago but come to find out it is leaking out. I bought the seals thinking thats where it was leaking from ( behind the prop). After looking at it closer the oil is leaking from the prop shaft screw. BUT, the screw wont come out. It seems like the threads were crossed at one time and now it just free spins and wont come out. First things first how do I get that screw out? I cant hardly get in there very well because the gear case is in the way and I cant figure out how to remove it. Help please!

If the other is removed. Try attaching a small flywheel puller to the bearing spool (if there are provisions for such a tool). Use the pulley puller to apply pressure to the bearing spool while slowly trying to turn the screw (lefty loosey) out. Continue applying pressure to the bearing spool and slowly remove the screw.

How about a pair of "needle nose" visegrips? Thinking you can grab the head of the screw and pull outward as you turn the screw. Maybe a Dremel tool with a small grind wheel that you could grind off the head of the screw to at least remove the bearing housing.

Thanks for all the input! Im assuming I cant get the housing out without removing the screw (5) that is stripped. Is that correct? Also if I ever do get the stripped screw out how do I remove the housing so that I can decide the best way to fix the problem at hand? Im new in the boat world and am learning quickly that nothing is easy or cheap haha. Thanks!

You need to get both of those screws out in order to get the bearing housing out. The bearing housing may simply slide out but, you may need to use a puller to get it out.

The needlenose vicegrips is a good idea but I dont have any that are skinny enough or long enough to get in there.
