1989 Black Max 1750

I just got this 19 ft runabout with a 175 HP mercury black max outboard. Believe it is a 1989 model. The power tilt on this motor will go all the way down but will only go up a few degrees part way. I need to bring the motor all the way up to trailer it. Is there a limit switch on these models? I sure could'nt find one. Any suggestions on what could be the problem and how to raise it up if there is something big wrong with the power tilt? Thanks

There is a manual release on that motor. If it is not tightly closed, you'd get those symptoms. If it is, opening it will allow you to wrestle the motor fully up and either put it on a trailer rest or flip the latch on the motor to hold it up.

Thanks. Is this release located on the left side as you face the motor from the stern? There was a lever there that we pushed back and held towards the boat while we activated the tilt motor but the progress of the tilt stopped a few degrees up. Perhaps this is not the manual release you were referring to. Should we look inside the motor itself? Thanks again.

It is a threaded cap. Probably made of black plastic with a bolt pattern and a screwdriver slot on the top. The cap, when opened releases the pressure on the hydraulic cylinder allowing you to wrestle with the outboard.​

Lower part of frame, above the trim limit pin holes. I believe it is on the starboard side.

The threaded cap near the top angled downward is the fill cap. If you pull it off with the unit down, you will wear much hydraulic oil and maybe lose an eye.
