i have a 1989 johnson 70 hp that has some trouble starting.it takes about 3 min to get it cranked and running.sometimes when i first try to crank it will fire up for about 5-10 seconds then cut off.then when i hit the starter again it sounds like the starter is not engaging the flywheel.

Take the cover off and see if it is engaging or not. You poor starting could be a dirty carb, choke not working properly, weak spark, bad gas....the list goes on. When was the last time that you put in a carb kit? Have you done a spark test? What is your compression. These are the things that the experts will want to know.

Re: 1989 70hp johnson starting problem

i bought the boat about three years ago.at that time i drained all the gas out and put fresh gas in.i also changed all three plugs with ngk plugs.and i put a can of sea foam in every tank of gas that i put in the boat.i have never done a spark test or a comp test and have never cleaned the carbs. and i will take the hood off and check the starter. i am from caswell county nc just north of raleigh.

Re: 1989 70hp johnson starting problem

as far as my starting process goes.i just turn the key and let it turn over about 2-3 seconds then i push the choke in.after that it fires up for about 5 sec. then cuts off .this process is repeated for 2-4 min until it finally cranks up. and occassionally it sounds like the starter and flywheel are not engaging.

You should pump the fuel bulb until it is firm.
Turn the key to on position and then push key in for 5 sec or so.
Then try to start holding key in.
Once it starts release key and you may need to bump the key in once or twice to keep it going.
Good luck and let us know how this works for ya
