I have a 1989 200 hp blackmax that runs like a dream. The problem I have is that when I go to start it sometimes when the key is turned the starter spins but doesn't jump up and engage the flywheel. When it does engage you here a definate click and it jumps up and engages. Other times it just spins and never jumps up. Could this be a bad starter solenoid or could it be the starter going bad. I am really hoping it is a 25 dollar solenoid versus a 200 dollar starter. If it is the starter do they make a rebuild kit or is it just cheaper to buy a new one. Thanks for any information. Josh

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, Josh. Do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Good luck and tell us what you find. :)

Try cleaning the spring with WD40 and then a light coat of white grease on the shaft.

Look around in your area. Just about everywhere there are starter rebuilder guys that will make your starter brand new for less than a hundred dollars usually. It's worth it to me

Re: 1989 200 HP Blackmax Starter Issue

Thanks for the advice. I read somehwere else on the net that it could be the bendix of the starter. People said to remove it and clean it off. Said it could be gunk built up in the reverse threads that it rides up on to engage. They also said to oil it up and try it. This afternoon I plan on taking the bendix off and cleaning it and the shaft and threads it spins on and try that. The starter, when it does engage spins the flywheel plenty fast to start it and the engine starts right up everytime it engages. Its just frustrating to take it off the trailer get in the boat and have to turn the key 15 times and hear it spin and then keep switching it on and off until finally the bendix flies up and starts the motor. Thanks again and let me know if there is anything else I can try. Josh
