I am working on an '88 Party Hut pontoon. It came with the trailer and a 115 merc and stainless prop. 2 hours after bring it home, my wife and kids had the deck stripped of all furniture, cabinets and console. Not even on the water once and the boat looks like it exploded. It has the cabin with a sink and stove. It had a minkota trolling motor but that went to a friend. The original plan was to replace the seats and the walls. WRONG!!!! The wood on the upper deck was rotted around the edges so that would have to be replaced. We started rebuilding the walls using some vinyl panels and new wood and foam. WRONG!!!!! Vinyl started warping a lot and bubbling up. So much for the walls. Soon to be aluminum tube frame with a foam core and aluminum panels like they use in semi trailers.
We decided to go ahead and pull the cabin to replace the carpet. From what we saw and were told by the previous owner the deck was new so no worries there........You guessed it...WRONG!!!
When we pulled the carpet my wife noticed some stickers on the ends of the plywood. Seems it was treated CDX........ Give me a break! It had already started corroding the aluminum cross rails. OK, so now the carpet AND the deck will have to be changed. $$$$$$$ Yup, it's a money pit but it's my money pit.
SO, pulled the carpet which revealed an already rotting and delaminating deck. Unbolted, pryd and drilled (using a 3/4" hole saw...Thanks to this forum) and removed all the decking.
Took a long look at the tubes and decided to clean them. Tried it on the boat but that wasn't working. (shark hide cleaner is great stuff) SO....I jacked up the boat one side at a time and removed the tubes. Did it by myself but would recommend that you get a friend or three... Turned them upside down on some sawhorses and went to work. Had to use a die grinder and scotchbrite pads to remove all the junk. After cleaning all three this way i decided that polishing them would wait.....for a very long time.
Reinstalled the tubes. Remember this thing has three so getting my 6" 4" frame between them was a real......you get the idea.
I got the decking installed after squaring the boat and installed the carpet. The previous owner had the boat 1 1/4" out of square. I had to jack up one side again and loosen all the tube bolts to get it to move.

The side rails are being modified to continue the railing all the way to the front of the boat. I'll install new aluminum panels on the new sections to match the rest.

The vinyl stripes that tracker put on were made to last forever. I tried stripper (worked on paint but decals held), I tried a heat gun (it's amazing how much you can permanently warp an aluminum panel in a very shorty time....took 3 hours to flatten the panel) I finally resorted to a 150 grit sanding disc and light pressure to sand the decals off. This will be followed up by some primer then paint. Leaning towards Imaron but it'll probably be something less toxic.

I still have to replace brake lines on the trailer (using cunifer brake lines and aircraft hoses and fittings), the wheels and tires, brakes and surge unit and wiring and lights. We already replaced the bunks (while tubes were getting cleaned) and painted it.

The motor will go to the shop for a tune up before it goes on the water. I removed the oil injection system. I would rather be sure the oil is there rather than relying on a buzzer and light. I am also installing 3 new batteries, 2 of which are for house. I am also removing the 19 gallon gas tank and installing a new 29 gallon tank. Should last awhile when cruising...

Right now I have a love hate/thing going on with the boat.

When it's finished it will have new decks, carpet, walls, surround sound, GPS, console and gauges, all new counter tops and tables, lights, stove, sink and a built in grill. Some of it is ready to be installed.

Yea, its a huge amount of work but i figure it will be a huge amount of fun when it's finished.

I'll post pics when i get a chance.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

I once had a 93 and it was a great boat. I closed in the stern to give about half cabin and then I put a full enclosure up front.
Send some pictures along the way.

Sounds like a big project. I have a 1998 that needs considerable rehab. Where did you get your countertop and cabinets? Thanks!

Re: 1988 Party Hut 28' rebuild

I built my own replacement tops and cabinets , keeping the same style. White oak, trimmed with red oak and clear colored glass inserts. Kind of a built in chess board with 3/4" tiles in the center of the table. Already pulled all three logs and cleaned. No leaks!!! Wha Hoo!!
Have replaced the treated wood deck with marine ply and installed 28oz carpet. Currently stripping the decals from the panels with aricraft stripper and a pressure washer. Works great. All i have to do is sand, paint and stripe.
Getting ready to go to indianapolis to get aluminum paneling to replace original outer walls. Am using 1/8" plywood on the inner walls covered with fiberglass and epoxy to give a warmer look to the interior. Windows coming from the RV catalogs as is the new stainless stove.
The railings will be painted a dark grey. Deck edging and sun deck edging as well as the wall edges will be polished aluminum. panels and outer walls will be white with blue and grey trim. 100% LED lighting on boat and trailer, GPS equipped, Stereo, New helm, seats..etc.......
It's definitly a work in progress..
I'll try to post some pics soon....

Re: 1988 Party Hut 28' rebuild

Im located in bloomington, indiana. Will post pics after i downsize them a bit. I now have all the decals stripped. Aircraft stripper, a scraper and a power washer. Awesome!!! Have removed the ugly green corragated panels from the doner Harris pontoon and replaced the fencing with new aluminum panels. Same aluminum sheet used on semi trailer siding. Strong stuff.
Almost finished with the body work on the back end. Corners took a hit over the years but it's smoothing out nicely. Ready to final sand, prime and paint. Sounds easy buts its 28' long and both sides plus the rails. LOTS of sanding.....
More soon.....

Pics of Day 1. Picking up boat in near celia, kentucky. Getting ready to head back to indiana. You can see the buckling walls. If these pics load, I'll start showing the progress. Have stripped boat down to logs, removed and cleaned logs, replaced deck and carpet, started to modify and paint fence. We are extending the fence to within 6" of the front. This gives us more usable room.

Can you describe what you are talking about. Do you mean the canvas cover? I am thinking of putting a buggy style bimini top on the rear. It offers shade with a view and can be closed in with lightweight tarps and plastic clamps. If that idea doesn't work, I'll have a boat cover shop make me new canvas (sunbrella material) cover.... I want this boat to be around for a very long time.....

Re: 1988 Party Hut 28' rebuild

I have not found anyone that has parts for this boat except some from tracker and a couple salvage yards in florida. Definitely no canvas... I will let you know if i hear of any. I dont plan on a stock cover so if I hear of one, I'll let you know.

Re: 1988 Party Hut 28' rebuild

Great pics, that boat is exackly the same as mine. Is that a 115 hp merc? We are planning the to sleep aboard ours at the lake but our season here is only about 2 1/2 - 3 months long and then the snow will fly. Sorry about my lack of correct name for parts but what I am looking for is the corner pcs on the deck that cover the plywood at each corner where the outer trim meets. The two on the stern have anchor holes. So in total there is 4 on the main deck and 4 on the upper deck, Can you tell me who the wrecker is in FL?

Re: 1988 Party Hut 28' rebuild

www.pontoonspecialists.com/ carries different styles of corner caps. Couldn't find caps on I-Boats. I buy from I-Boats first. If they don't have it, then i'll look elsewhere. I prefer to support these folks as they have already saved me a ton of money and my boat will be better because of their advice.
Cant remember the wreckers name. I'll try to find it for you.
And yep.....It has the 115 Merc. I'm not going to use the injection system though. Can't afford a new one and i don't trust the old one. I'll have the engine serviced as soon as i get everything bolted back on the boat and can take it to the shop. I love that motor. Very reliable.
Just ordered the new Eclipse Teleflex gauges and the center support bars for the big wall sections. Also ordered some more epoxy to coat the wood paneling for the walls and ceiling. The ceiling is going to be 1/2" marine ply bonded to epoxy coated oak paneling. Part of the walls will have the oak also. The roof will be covered in rubber roofing with carpet over that. All exposed wiring will be ran through stainless flexible conduit.
For now, still working on sanding and painting the fences. Fun in the sun!!!! Arrrrgggggggg.......

Teardown 05.jpgTeardown 04.jpgTeardown 03.jpgTeardown 02.jpgTeardown.jpg

Various stages of teardown. The pic by the fence is TWO HOURS after I brought it home. My family thought they were being helpful. The decking was worse towards the front of the boat. The green panels and the top frame are from a doner boat. The green panels have since been replaced by whate ones. What did i get myself into???? Oh well....back to work!

Teardown 007.jpg

Teardown 06.jpg

The fence is in the bottom pic.....2 hours after i got it home!!!!!. Also the cleaning of the logs is the top pic. I pulled all three by myself. Not that heavy but akward to say the least. I used a right angle die grinder with grey scotchbrite discs for the crusty stuff and sharkhide cleaner for everything else. Logs are clean and free of leaks.....so far.
You can see how bad the walls were. When I removed the aluminum corner pieces they disintegrated. Very bad design. The new walls will have an aluminum (think semi trialer siding) outer skin, a 3/4" foam core with a 3/4" internal aluminum square tube center brace and either epoxy coated oak paneling or plastic panels. They won't fall apart again.
As of now, the boat has been redecked with marine plywood and all stainless fasteners and new 28 oz carpet. All seams are sealed in the decking and the boat was squared before decking. It was origionally 1 1/2" out of square..... One hint i got from this forum: use a 3/4" holesaw with the drill bit removed and a slow speed to cut around stubborn screws or bolts. It lets you get the deck up quicker and you can go back with vicegrips and remove the stuck or stripped screws with very little effort. I had to cut out 27 bolts this way. It worked great!
Currently working on the fences. All the decals have been removed and now we are priming prior to paint.
Off to work on the fences...............85% humidity and 75 degrees at 4 in the morning. another 95+ degree day.....I just love Indiana in the summer..............NOT!!!!!!! :(
