Need help with an ‘88 Mercury 9.9 two stroke. It is set up for remote throttle/ignition/etc. Everything worked fine using the rope start. Hooked up the controls and the motor wouldnt turn over. Figured out I forgot to connect the kill switch wires. Fixed it and it turned over nicely, but wouldnt start. Tried the rope start, and now it failed as well.
I scoured these forums and tried all the solutions to similar starting problems. After many failed attempts and tests and troubleshooting, I threw everything I had at it: brand new stator(s), new trigger, new cdi box, new solenoid, new rectifier, new plugs, new oem wires, new sierra coils…still not even close to starting. Checked and re-checked the flywheel key and it is good. Timing is spot on still. Tried disconnecting the kill wires and still nada. The 20amp glass fuse on the engine side was in good shape, replaced with a new one anyway. Also, I have the left coil connected to green/white and powering top cylinder, and right coil connected to green/yellow (actually green/red with new cdi box) and powering bottom cylinder. There seems to be no spark..
I changed the primer bulb, hose, and tank, and cleaned all the fittings. Changed the fuel filter and thermostat. Made sure the carb was getting fuel and the primer bulb stayed solid.
Need some ideas on where to look. Its not like I changed a bunch of stuff and now its not working. It started BEFORE all that, out of nowhere. Im beyond frustrated and have aoent hours reading thru forums and manuals and troubleshooting. Help!!!!!!!
