So I recently bought a 1988 201 Liberator which is very clean and well maintained. Unfortunately in my haste to buy the boat and my lack of due diligence I've now discovered that the forward two thirds of the keel has the fiberglass woven mesh showing as if the boat was beached quote a bit by the previous two owners....the rest of the hull is very clean. As far as I can tell the integrity of the hull is intact but it has me concerned obviously. I've looked into purchasing a keel guard but I was wondering what other options I could pursue...new gel coat? Thanks for the help and yes I feel like an idiot.

Depending on the depth of the wear....... yes a gel coat repair kit will probably do the best. Are the fibers that are showing ....demonstrate any signs of wetness? If so then we will have to go deeper and use fiberglass first.

Once you have a gel coat repair done your choice ........ stay that way and do not beach or add a keel guard on-top of that.

Liberators are nice boats!!

It was not lack of due diligence ......... it was emotion that clouded your view!!! ;)

Thanks Bob...I feel better now and yes Liberators are awesome boats!

I just stopped and talked to a local boat guy and he also put my mind at ease not to mention he turned me on to the best OMC mechanic in the area....winner,winner chicken dinner!
