This motor has gotten hot and scored the 2 right
side cylinder walls. Shall I fix it or get another motor? I know power head are probably
available. Don't want to spend alot of money
tops $4000.

Welcome!!

You can certainly get going for less than 4K. If the motor was performing well before it overheated I'd fix that one.

Are you sure it overheated or did it break the rings?

Re: 1988 Johnson 90 hp outboard

Hi: I have found that the pistons or at least
three of them have slap or are lose in the cylinder walls. Bad! The motor would have to have a complete overhaul. I now have purchased a used 60 HP two stroke Tahatsu and a 6 HP Nissan
four stroke kiker motors. New 70 to 90 HP two
or four stroke motors are out of this world in price. Will do with the two I got for $3800.
Thank for the reply.

2 stroke pistons are supposed to be loose.
