1988 johnson 88spl starting problems

Ok. I brought the boat out the other day with no problems, after running it for a while I shut it off and fished when I started it back up the motor cranked but would not turn over. I also noticed a fuel slick in the water. Once home I hooked the hose up using the ear muffs and the motor started on the 1st crank. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks for any help.

The motor was flooded the time on the water, hence the fuel slick. Either it quit firing (electrically), or there is a carb problem, which seems unlikely that both carbs would fail simultaneously.

There are components, like the power pack, which can fail at high temps and work at normal temps.

There are more subtle things, like the ignition/kill circuit that can also intermittently fail.

Thanks for the advice I intially thought it was flooded but I took it out the next day and the same issues occured. The carb was rebuilt about 5 years ago when I bought the boat so I'm thinking that's not the problem but then again I really have no clue what is. Again Thnaks Jason

reead about ethanol, and carb cleaning, sounds like a float needle is not seating properly. also carbs will flood with the motor tilted and the fuel hose still connected. tilting puts the floats out of level.

Don't know if you have rebuilt carbs before,but don't be affraid to try these with a good manual.Did mine for the first time and realy simple.I haven't put them back on yet but I'm confident that they will be fine.The guys on this board are realy helpful.
