Maybe you should just add a little bit of oil. I use regular ATF.

id start with making sure it is full of fluid...

I am guessing the electricals work..

if you have fluid and it wont stay up, you may need new seals....havent a clue where to start...a BRP dealer...i guess...they list the parts.....so maybe they sell them...

my motor was frozen..i took it all apart.... and cleaned and reassembled...what a pain....havent tried it yet...

good luck

Thread I Have the same problem with my Johnson. The Motor goes up but will not stay up .I took it to a friend of min who has a hydralic business for ove 30 yrs and he told me that the seals were bad . The probability of repairing it were almost O ZERO because the Housing was Aluminum and the screws were probable Frozen in the housing and would strip trying to get them out and you couldn't rethhread them for new screwsbecause of the thiuckness of the housing wall. I'm just looking for a new motor and Pump now . Even went to the original dealer where I purchased the boat &they didn't know what to do 'cause theydont handle the boats any more

Re: 1988 johnson 48 spl t&t

that unit the op has is a unique unit.....a standard TNT unit is probably easier to get parts for. I just picked up a motor with a bad TNT unit...two previous owners couldnt get it to work and finally drilled the manual release out!!!

I got the motor took the unit off...and machined what was left of the manul release out and got a used manual realse and installed that. I took the unit apart and the piston seals were great!! all three..the wiper seals were great!!!, the o-rings that were sandwiched between several flat mating surfaces of the unit were all dry rotted... i replaced all those... and put the unit back together...works like a charm!!

my point being..it might just be O-rings...easy stuff!!!

PS for aluminum parts heat helps get bolts out......aluminum will expand!!! you dont need it 800 degrees!!! 300-400 degrees and the casting expands from around the threds of a bolt and you turn the bolt out!!!!

dont get it so hot that seals 4-5" away melt!!!

good luck
