You may want to check out This Old Outboard channel on YouTube. He did a series of videos on this vintage of motors. It may give you some ideas. Entertaining to say the least.
Today i took it back out. It idles really well but now even with me pumping the bulb i cant get it over idle. While i was out there the motor shut off and wouldnt start again. The primer bulb was hard but i had a feeling that there was no fuel getting to the carb bowl. I removed the bottom plug of the carb and sure enough it was empty. While the bottom plug was removed the bulb was still hard and would not pump any more at all as if there was a blockage. I removed the line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb and fuel came spraying out and the primer bulb softened again. So the problem was definitly in the carb. Thinking the needle must be stuck i took the carb apart and put it back together again. This at least alowed the motor to start again but my original issue was still there. Im hopeing what happened is related to my original issue. Anyone ever hear of this? Am i i correct in guessing it was a sticking needle?
Yes sticking needle, you definitely arent quite the first ever with that!. Check that the float hasnt swollen over time as that can happen making it get stuck
The motor is working now. I re-cleaned the carb and that did the trick. I am not really sure how or why cause it seemed spotless after the 1st cleaning but I am not complaining! Thanks to all for their help and input.
