Thanks. I'll give that a try.

I tried taking that bracket out and didn't get too far. I have to remove the carburetor to get a lower nut off.

Any idea what that bracket was for? It seems to be linked to something on the bottom.

My motors are still stowed away keeping themselves warm. I don't recall seeing that though -- might be part of a pulley assembly to guide the rope. If pulling up vertically to start, btw, there are devices to permit that (as in sailboat kicker use).

IT hqas nothing to do with guiding the rope !!------As stated clearly before it was used for a starter interlock on earlier models.--Worked when throttle was open too far.----Look for it in parts break down of 78 and older models.--The red springy thing you have on that recoil now is the newer starter interlock.----But it does not work with the old style pulley you have !!!!

Your picture is not clear.-----And I do not know what you are pointing at.-----Or if the parts on your 88 model are in fact an 88 model.-----Early motors did have an interlock from throttle to the recoil mounted there.!!-----Post a few more pictures of your recoil and motor about 10 pictures will help determine what you have here.----May not even be a 1988 model !

Might clearly state which early models/years you reference.

I had a crazy idea about not taking the bracket out and just sawzall the top off. Am I nuts?
Yeah, the little red springing thing doesn't do anything. The bracket doesn't do anything except help wear down the rope.

Until (possibly through) about ’79, a plastic spring and dog was used as an interlock, similar to the red plastic and spring device used on later models (throttle side of starter): https://www.leeroysramblings.com/Johnson 9.9_15.htm . To remove the bracket you probably have to take off the air horn and the starter, and potentially the carb. Look through the Ramblings link to find some directions about starter removal, if unfamiliar with the process. I do not know when the black plastic interlock was first used, so cannot ID what you have. (You may want to hold off on the sawzall for a bit.) :)

How about the eyelet? Is it supposed to be completely round, or have a notch? Mine has a notch! I do have a new eyelet on the way. If it's not supposed to have a notch then I will replace it and see how long the new rope lasts. And carry an extra rope with me.

Then if it is still eating ropes it has to be that bracket.

Get oem rope (60-65"). Notch is likely the problem, but sure looks like the bracket could be an issue. Maybe you could rig that for a pulley/guide of some kind. I think you can emergency start that puppy with a rope around the flywheel, but not sure.

You might want to get the red plastic interlock out of there, as it probably could ride in and interfere. Your call, of course.

I have used OEM Johnson rope and it didn't last too long either.

...but cost more, right? The pictures show the outer layer wadding up at the ferrule, so something going on there -- that notch, probably.

First thing I do when I get one of these is remove that dam interlock and also on the other side the natural safety mechanism as they make this motor harder to start especially in cool weather as they keep the throttle closed. That silly red gismo (some will love this description) has to be cut off with a Dremel tool or hacked at and twisted until it breaks off in pieces. IT will also make that starter WAY more easy to put on next time as it is a general pain. One thing about the 2 stroke Japan outboards before the environmental gestapo banned them in the West was that they had perfected the portable 2 stroke as to be very easy to work on. The Tohatsu 9.8 Is a good example with studs that make it very easy to remove the carb instead of nuts, (which are nuts) for just 1 example.

This is A BIG THANK YOU and an update!!

Thanks to ALL who offered advice. Your expertise is priceless.

I put in a new eyelet, I pressure washed, I took out the interlock starter bracket, I bought a Honda pull cord from a lawn mower shop and now the motor is so much easier to start. Woohooo!!!!
