I am looking at buying a 1988 50 hp force, We put muffs on it and started but no water came out the ports, can someone tell me where the thermostat is located?

Thermostat may not be your problem most likely a bad impeller. Make sure you have a good seal around the muffs. The force motor are hard to run on muffs you may want to try a garbage can filled with water.

We tried that but may not have had the water deep enough, only a few inches above the intake. Should it be deeper? But would still like to know where thermostat is located?

The water level needs to be above the water pump. Just make sure it is higher than the top of your lower unit. Here is a blow up of a 88 50hp not sure if this is your model but thermostat is located above the sparkplugs on the front of your head. 88 Force

The motor could take a couple of minutes to warm up before it starts spitting out water. If you thermostat is working it takes awhile to heat up so tstat will open. If you ran the motor and the impeller was not spinning in water it is hosed. You will have to replace it. Friction will burn the impeller out in a couple of seconds.

And keep in mind that this model has no telltale. The only way to know it is pumping water, is by a spray, mist ,or sputtering from the two exaust port holes in the back of the leg.
