I have to replace #3 coil Force 1988 Model 1251X8A. Looks like 3 studs hold the plate on all electronics. Seems only way to take it all off and replace new coil..That the "ticket"?

There's two bolts that hold the coil on to the plate. No need to take the whole plate off. I haven't seen many coils go bad. Usually it's a bad connection or a bad CD module. In your case, one section of the CD module that drives #3 coil is not used. You can wire it up as a test.

Be very careful when messing with the wiring on the Prestolite ignition system Very easy to get the wires crossed up. The wire colors on the CD modules are the same for both of them. The wires are position dependent. That is it depends on where you connect them on the terminal block that determines which coil they are connected to. Take pictures and write down where the wires go before disconnecting any of the wires.

Since 1986 I've only seen 1 maybe 2 coils go bad??
Sometimes the trigger lead breaks under the shrinkwrap and stops firing.
You try swapping the leads?

Like pnwboat suggested, pics etc.
If you unhook a wire make sure it's marked or put a tag on it.
The old ID tags wear off slide off etc.

Once you disconnect a wire there's no easy way to figure out where it goes??
I have 2 good triggers that have the id tags removed and no way to figure out where they go??
