1988 Force 50 lower unit install

Hi, I took out the lower unit to replace the impeller. I removed the four bolts that hold the lower unit and diconnected the shifting rod and it came right off. Now I'm trying to put it back and I line up the water tube and the shift rod but the main shaft won't go back in. I tried to use longer bolts to force it in after it was alligned but the propeller gets really hard to move and I think i might break something. Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something or if there's a trick to it? Thanks

You can try and turn the fly wheel a little. Or you could put the lower unit in forward and put the shifter in forward. Some time this helps.

And wipe any grease from the end of the driveshaft. The sides can have grease on them, but not the end.
