1988 force 125 seering problems

on my last outing i noticed my steering to be stiff, had some play to it, and when crusing the outboard tends to shift (steering, not the actuall outboard) a little, just enought for the back of the boat to skip a liitle to the side. any suggeestions on what could be causing this? any help would greatly be appreciated.

I'm guessing, but would bet it is the cable.

Disconnect it from the motor.
Move the motor by hand, from side to side.

Examine the entire length of the steering cable for a split or cut in the outer jacket.
