Looking for some help in getting the right pitch prop to pull water sports equip. I have a 19 and 17, but at 5000 feet above sea level my 125 Force doesn't seem to have a lot getting skiers out of the hole. Any thoughts?

Prop pitch selection should be based on your maximun rpm's.

What rpm are you running at wide open throttle(WOT), when not pulling a skier?

HAve you checked the compression?

Re: 1988 Force 125 o/b prop help

I am running about 5500 rpm's at full throttle. Haven't had a compression test since May 2002, but will get one done in the next month or so. My thought was that if I put on a 15 pitch prop I might get more power pulling a skier out of the hole. I tried a four blade prop, but max rpm's were only about 4500 and no power in pulling out a skier.

A 4-blade prop SHOULD be the way to go. If you were only 4500 max RPM, it sounds like you were over-propped/pitched, so it doesn't suprise me that you had no power to pull out a skier.

Find a 4-blade prop that will give you 5500 RPM max.

Sounds like you are firing on all cylinders, or you wouldn't be hitting 5500rpm.

If you drop down in pitch too much more, you will be in threat of overrevving your engine.

Try that 15, keep an eye on the tach. At 5000' altitude, you're only making a little over 100Hp. It'd be tough to spin a 4-blade. Have you had the carbs rejetted for your altitude (probably so, or it would've blown by now)?

Not necessarily. Too lean will cause problems, but at higher altitude it should run rich, which is always safe. It just won't make as much power as it could.

Could it be running too rich and that is the reason for not enough power?

It is Running rich, and should be jetted accordingly.
Very few understand jetting above 3000ft, and I've delt with it for 25 years.
You need to drop down .003 in jet size on the mains.
As for prop size, 15" is standard on most 18ft boats with semi-V, Tri-hull, or Deep-V for all load configurations when running only one prop for all uses....In the Denver area, 13" cupped is not uncommon.
Density Altitude is a very big concern in the summer there, and the "100HP" stated earlier is pretty close, and in the dead heat of summer 90HP would be pushing it.
If you're getting 5500 with a load with a 17" at WOT, you're doing good, but the over-rich condition needs to be corrected as it will increase hole-shot tremendously without changing props, and considerably less carbon build-up as a result. You will NEVER create the heat you would at sea-level because you will never develope designed power for the engine at 5000ft elevation.

Hey guys - thanks for all of the good info. I am off to my motor guy to share all of this and hopefully will be able to get things set properly. Again, thanks for all of the help.
