I'm trying to troubleshoot wiring for my trim/tilt on a 1988 50hp Evinrude.

I get 12v on both green and blue wires coming into tilt motor (3 wire motor), but no ground (I have to ground to transom to get the 12v reading on each wire).

I think there might be an issue with the relays, but I don't know where those are located on this engine. Are the relays wired in-line somewhere? Anyone have a wiring diagram?

Not all of them used a solenoid or relay.-----Follow your wiring.----Sometimes a solenoid was only used for UP on those units.----Often that was mounted in a box on the inside of the transom.

Interesting - thanks @racerone. So, my green/blue/black wiring from the tilt motor connects to my control box somehow.. I guess I'll have to do what you said and trace the wiring from motor to control box. Somewhere in there my ground is open I think.

You can use the wires coming from the tilt/trim to test if working by momentarily connecting to a 12V source. The way I remember which wire does what is that blue is up (for blue sky) and green is down (for green grass). Ground the black wire and touch either to 12V and the tilt/trim should run. If not then I would suspect tilt motor.
