#1 cyclinder was not firing I took the switch boxes off and swapped them amd all the wiring around thinking if it was a bad switch box it would move to the #2 cyclinder. When I went and rechecked the spark now #5 and # 6 have no fire. Are the switch boxes bad?

I don't know any gentle way to say this. You must have made a mistake somewhere.

Also, if you're looking for spark at cranking speed, be sure the starter isn't dragging. It must crank briskly to fire.

Re: 1988 black max 150 firing problem

I was in the proccess of checking the timing when I noticed #1 wasn't firing. I was checking the timing because I bought the boat and motor used and it would bog down everytime I went to try and take off. It bogged so bad it would die. I have been trouble shooting it and was ready to go and buy new switch boxes. I said to myself first swap the wires and switch boxes around and see if it follows it to #2. When #5 and #6 quit working and #1 started working it made me scratch my head. I went back through all the wiring and everything is where it is supposed to be. I am an electrician on AC power locomotives so I have some knowldge of electrical circuits. Since #1 was now firing I went ahead and finished timing it. (it was 3/8" off the starting .462 mark on the fly wheel) Since I had been timing it I had the white/black wire disconnected. when I was done and hooked everything back up I checked the spark again and #5 and #6 were now firing along with the other four. So I am not sure what made everything start working maybe there was some corroision on some of the connections that got knocked loose in the swapping. Maybe it was magic pixi dust. Anyway I will try to get it to the lake sometime this week after work and give it a go. PS: Starter cranks very briskly.

Pixie dust, that's it.:D

If'n I were you, I'd detail all the grounds around the switchboxes before I took it out. You already accidentally cleaned up all the others.

Ok, I had already done that so I will keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks,
