Recently I sold my 1988 90hp. Tilt/Trim 20" shaft Evinrude. The buyer took it to his mechanic to replace T-stats, and the mechanic said to do it properly, he needed to remove the powerhead to access the bolts. This sounds like an awful lot of trouble to change T-stats. And big money. Anyone know the proper technique?

Never heard of that one. Should be just under a housing on the back of the heads. 4 bolts and that's it to remove housing.

raleigho,

Find a different wrench.

They are not easy to get out, but it can be done.

For best access, just remove the bolts holding the lower cowl pan up. This allows about one more inch of clearance.

hello
the only time I ever remove the power head on those engines is for a broken bolt. I will burn off the housing and some times break it off with an air chisel but even on the bubble back ones I can still change it out with just a lower trim removal.
good luck and keep posting

Re: 1988 90hp. E-rudeThermostat Question

raleigho - I had a wrench tell me the same with my 1987 V4 SeaDrive this summer. He wanted $200.00 for the labor. Hmmmm.

I did it myself in my driveway following the basic procedure mentioned by djohns19. The OMC manual (shop & parts) were helpful. I used a 1/4" drive socket wrench with an extra long extension and universal plus a 7/16" open end wrench to get the tstat cover off.

The job is a bit of a pain and for that reason I would replace the tstats if the powerhead were removed for any reason whether they needed them or not.

Re: 1988 90hp. E-rudeThermostat Question

A 90 hp has the "flat back" exhaust plates making access to the cover extremely easy. 1.6 liter crossflows with the "bubble back" exhaust plate are a bit tougher but can be done as described.

Seems like a second opinion might be in order for your buyer. Dont let him scam you into paying for anything you havent already agreed to.
