Going to do some maintenance here shortly on my 20 year old motor, plan to rebuild the carbs and water pump at minimum. I was wondering if I should decarb first, what are the pros and cons? Basically what could go wrong?

The 88SPL runs great at higher RPM's I'd only like a bit better throttle response and a smoother idle and 6kt cruise. I'm thinking the carbs are the main culprit of the throttle and less then optimal low RPM performance. Would I get anything noticable out of a decarb? Is it something I should be doing anyway?

Compression is good as of last fall.

Thanks guys, this site is the best. I've found out enough on how and why to do a decarb, just would like some insight on fixing something that may not be broke.

if you cant remember last time the carb rebuild was done or longer than 2-3 years i would do it... if motor sat for awhile and carbs rebuild in the last year or so i would give decarb a try....

unless you rebuild the carbs we cannot tell you why is you have performance issue.. because most of the time if carb related... at idle or WOT .. good luck and keep us updated

Impeller is 3yrs old so last carb is about that long ago.

so is the verdict to decarb and then go about my business rebuilding? sounds like it.

The crossflow family of engines is susceptible to carbon accumulation around the rings and piston skirts. A problems with today's blend of fuels. The decarb process was to address this carbon problem. Probably a good thing to do every 100 hours or so. On an engine with carbon, after the decarb, you will notice easier starting and better idle. Left untreated over time, the carbon can cause stuck rings and piston scuffing.
