1988 85hp Tilt&Trim Fluid Check?

Hi, My clymer manual tells me to check the level with the engine down position and a label on the tilt pump tells me to check it with the engine tilted all the way up. Can anyone clear this up for me?

if the base of your pump reservoir is round then check with engine lowered. If base of your fluid reservoir is square then check with engine lifted.
