Reason for the cooling system modification?

One of the main reasons was due to block design as 1988-1993 60hp and 1984-1992 had a bridged ported exhaust and if block got hot from aerated water( water would turn to steam inside block) the cylinders ran hotter causing the "bridge" to expand and scuff exhaust side of piston. The tattle tell would still show impeller working and you would get no alarm horn. The "mods" address this problem.....

And in looking at the factory parts diagrams, 1996 was the first instance I could find where the Water Pump Indicator was officially moved to the top of the crankcase:

Masked up and painted. When fully dry, the finish will be a satin black:


Fully assembled with the new tell tale hose in place. Wanted to make sure the hose was routed so that all the water would drain out of it when in storage:

Figured this would be the end of this thread as a simple water pump R&R has been covered many times over in this forum and there would be no point in covering it again.


However:


The @%^% impeller was frozen to the drive shaft. I used a screwdriver to try and wedge it up with no success.

I used a box knife to cut the rubber vanes off the collar:


I found the sweet spot where the "key" was installed and I used a rotarty tool to cut a slot in the collar:


Next, I used a screwdriver and with a little twist, the collar split relieving the tension on the driveshaft:


And the collar slid right off:

The impellers are the same as I did a water pump R&R a few years back.
However, the stainless steel liner in the new kit is one piece and the old one was 2 pieces.

All cleaned up and ready for the new water pump:

Note the change in the impeller hsg cup. They went from two piece to one. This also helped with the water flow.

Yes, and the water inlet in the bottom plate has changed as well.

A follow-up, and my final posting to this thread.

Yesterday was the first time I had the outboard out on the water since my rebuild and here are some of my observations after about 1 hour of run time:

Water pressure with the new impeller and modifications:
12psi @ idle
20psi @ WOT
(These are the same pressures I got when I first purchased the outboard in 1988).

Since the tell-tale restrictor was removed as part of the cooling system modification (post #11 of this thread) the new tell-tale water stream seemed to have less pressure but a whole lot more volume.

Also, when starting the outboard the tell-tale stream seems to have some water bubbles in it for the first few seconds until the air in the upper cooling system gets purged. As noted in OMC Service Bulletin 2276 (Post #1 of this thread) this was the whole purpose of this modification:

?Problem: An engine can be damaged by overheating when air becomes trapped in the upper half of the cooling system.?

?Solution: Relocating the water pump indicator tee to the top of the cylinder block ensures air can be vented from the cooling system and an adequate water level in the cooling system can be maintained at idle.?

I would say that the modifications were a success based on my observations and I wouldn?t hesitate to do these same simple modifications again and I hope this thread helps anyone contemplating the same mods to their own cooling sytem.

Not sure but it came with the kit so I installed it.
No part number that I could find but I think I could find something similar at the harware store. All this grommet does is hold the indicator hose in place when the restrictor is replaced.

Hey, hopefully you are still on this forum. Because I can’t find anything regarding this motor and of course I don’t know the exact model because of the darn transom plate or sticker that’s not there in the freeze plug. I have wasn’t able to give me any assistance from anybody with taking the numbers off of it. But anyway, if you could either explain to me or share a picture or something of that nature regarding the thermostat and what else is in there with it because I’m replacing mine since it recently started to run hot and it’s stuck closed. I found out so being that it was always fine and I never had issues but I started reading online about a pop valve/pressure relief valve and I found things that might be before this motor but I’m not sure but then I was reading that the thermostat itself sort of acts like the poppet valve because it presses against the spring and when it heats up, everything works accordingly. Because when I got the boat up until a month ago, I never had any problems and the only thing in the thermostat housing was the spring and the thermostat. And I was doing work on the boat this winter so I took the motor off and took the thermostat out to look at something and then I dropped a bolt so if it doesn’t need anything other than the thermostat and the spring, I just want to know the order they go. It appears it should be the threaded side of the thermostat with the mushroom head part facing away from the boat and the threaded part going into the cylinder head first and then spring goes on the rubber pointed part of the thermostat and onto the cover that is held closed with four bolts. So basically, if there is anything other than just the thermostat and the spring in there, if you can let me know the parts that would be great and no matter what I still need to know the direction and order everything goes back together because I think I am right, but also Google and all this AI crap just make matters worse and starts confusing everything so whoever sees this, whether it’s the original post person or somebody else, if they can, please answer those two questions for me, but the motor always ran perfectly fine, especially with the age of this, and it only had the spring and the thermostat in place and that little rubber Gromit that’s in the cylinder head as well. But I’m gonna find out now when I put it in the water, but hopefully somebody can give me an answer so I know if things are in the correct order whether it runs right or not at the moment

I found great videos when it came to doing my lower unit oil seals that helped a lot but when it comes to this part of the motor, I guess there was three different types that Johnson/Evinrude had that year
