1988 70 hp Evinrude dies when idle

the motor on my boat will start. It runs when i apply the throttle but it dies when i let it try to idle. any suggestions?

turn up idle speed screw. clean carbs, clogged low speed jets. spark failing on one or more cylinders.

do you have new gas, have you replaced the plugs, is the gasket on the carb seat leaking at all, have you checked all of the carb adjustments? There are lots of quick, cheap things to check.
