I have a problem in my lower unit, can anyone tell me if the bearing housing screws out or pulls out? Thanks

Harmonic balancer puller from the auto parts store. Some stores have them to rent/loan. You will have to find some suitable bolts to use with it.

Are there threaded holes on the 40 model bearing carrier ?

on my 1999 jonhson i used the locking tabs holes ,very easy to pull out in my case with threaded rods.

Slide hammer.----Piece of threaded rod with a hook bent on the end might work.

A few methods have been used through the years. Unfortunately, I don't know which is applicable to your motor. A J-rod with a slide hammer as racerone just mentioned is one method. A couple more are shown in these pictures
