1988 140hp johnson controls fitting question?

Hello everyone this is my first day here on iboats and my first question. I just got a 1988 140hp johnson ob and I was wondering if the controls on my 1974 135hp johnson will conect and work with my new 140hp? thanks for any help!:confused:

They are both red plug motors and they will physically hook up and work, but the 74 harness will not have the correct tilt and trim if it has one at all, and will not have the VRO wiring. The74 will also have a warm up lever where the 88 harness either pulled out or had a button to engage throttle only. You can find used harnesses reasonably on ebay or from used boat yards. I would try to find one with all the features you need and that had the correct length cables and buy it. I think you will be happier in the long run

should i look specificaly for the 1988 harness or is there a range of years that will work? thanks for your help!

if i am not mistaken, it is plug and play, you can get a trim harness as an add on. the vro uses the same horn as the other items, an it is controled from the motor end. you can also get a handle that has the T n T switch on it, that will swap out, or you can console mount a T n T switch.
