Hello! I am about to start the process of replacing the transom on my 1987 dual console Stratos 179v, and I need help with how to get the top cap removed. If any body has ever done this before on this boat or just knows how to do it any help would be appreciated! I can upload pictures this weekend if needed.

Hey, welcome to the Iboats forum. Pictures will get you the most and best responses here. How far along are you in the process?

I removed the cap of my Yar-craft last fall. The basic process is not too hard. You remove the motor and rub rail first and any transom drain tunes etc that connect the top cap to the hull. The rubrail generally should have an insert that you can pry out. Underneath there will be screws or rivits that hold the rubrail on, remove screws or drill out rivits. Under that there will be more screws or rivits. Remove them. Where the cap and hull meet, there is a bead of glue that has to be cut. Some boats also have some fiberglass holding the two together that you might have to cut through.

Then start lifting the cap, I put a chain through the front cleats, and used a hoist. There are pictures of the process in the Yar-craft link in my signature. You can also try and lift by hand starting at the front and sliding 2x4s under the cap as you go. You may need to disconnect wiring and hoses beforehand or as you go depending on what is accessible with the cap on. The hardest part is usually at the transom, because lots of manufacturers glue the hull and cap together pretty strongly there. Depending on how you lift the cap and how tough the glue is will determine how you proceed next. I was able to break the glue by prying and hoisting, but you might need the help of a sawzall.

I'm not actually very far along yet, I just finished disconnecting all of the wiring, so now the motor is ready to be pulled. I've just been trying to figure out what the next step entails while I am out of town for the week. And Ill definitely upload some pictures when I get back in town this weekend. Thanks for the help!
