I believe I have a bad stator. My motor was running great untill last weekend. It normally revs up to about 5500rpm. It will only go to 3000-3500 now. It seems to run pretty well, but will not go past 3k. I've checked the fuel system & everything seems to be in order. At 1k rpm the high leads are about 140v each & low are 20. At 3000 rpm one high lead is over 200 & the other has dropped to 50. I'm pretty sure that is the problem, just looking for confirmation before ordering expensive parts.

Re: 1987 merc 115 bad stator?

Do the resistance checks in the book, red-blue wires and red/wht-to-blue/wht and I bet you find out-of-spec readings.

Make sure you also disconnect the bias wire between power packs and do resistance checks to ground on the bias terminals of each pack.

I just did a late model 90 HP Inline that wouldn't accelerate above 2200 rpm but idled very well so I knew that there wasn't much else wrong with it (or it wouldn't have run so well at idle).

One of the stator windings had a high reading which got worse after sitting in the hot sun for a week or so.

Installed a new stator and all is well.

BTW check out the price for a CDI replacement stator at www.boatfix.com ; it certainly beats the $tealer's price all to Heck!!!

G'luck..........ed
