I have a 1987 Johnson 225 model number J225TXCUB I have replaced and tested stater rectifier timing trigger both power packs all six coils brand new spark plugs redid the carbs synchronized the carburetor and timing I have 78 pounds of compression on all six cylinders the engine fires right up and idles at 1200 on muffs but when I attempt to rub the engine once it gets around 3500 RPM it starts to break up I have been unable to get it to the water to test it fuel pump is also brand new it is a dual pump from master tech marine the VRO pump was removed before I got the motor the ship interrupt their switch has been disconnected prior to me owning the motor any recommendations would be highly appreciated. PS before I get a bunch of replies about the 78 pound compression it's my understanding that this is a low compression looper motor if I am wrong please send me links or something to show what my compression should have been again when I try to start the boat it will not spin three times before it's running
Thank you in advance , Beat You There

Well I won't comment on the numbers, others will come. My best guess though, if your motor will run in the water, on a boat, up to 3500 RPM's, then the motor itself is fine and you have other things going on.

Spoke to another older gentleman that has been in the business for about 50 years and he says that my numbers are not an issue I would also like to add the motor runs up to 5800 RPMs it just won't stay there it surges

Test run with a portable tank and hose.
I'm going to disconnect the temperature switches and put on a portable tank and see what happens I'm going to try those things each individually the temperature switches are about the only thing on the engine that has not been changed out

What is the total; $$$ amount spent so far with the parts cannon?----What actual trouble shooting has been done so far ?-----Revving on a hose in gear is still neutral and can be misleading you.

To be honest I lost count I'm sure somewhere between two and three grand at this point it's the principal I'm not stopping until I have this engine running right I have a pair of 175 so I can put on the back of the boat I also have two other 225 HP I could put on the boat

One moment you say 3500 RPM's, then another moment you say 5800 RPM's....which is it?

I'm assuming, wait, I'm hoping you mean on the water pushing a boat.....if not it means nothing.

Doesn't look like something the coast guard would use...
Looks like a walk around. Should serve you well.

I live in Seattle, is that we're you and the boat are?

The temperature switches detect an overheat condition.----They sound an alarm.----I do not believe they are linked to the ignition / spark system.----Checked carburetor float bowls for being warped ?----Looked into issues with crankcase compression ??

Well thank you for telling me the Coast Guard wouldn't use it it's not like I have the paperwork for it and if you blow up the picture you can still see the striped painted on the side and up front where the badge went no I'm not in Seattle Washington that's where the boat is from But you can stop replying to my messages merely by your attitude I don't want any advice from you thank you so very much

I disconnected the temperature sensors just to make sure I didn't think they would affect the motor either I did not use Johnson rebuild kits on the carburetors so I just ordered new ones I will check for a float bowl issue when I take the carburetors apart recheck compression again today With engine warm and I am still at 78 pounds per cylinder all six cylinders read the same put the Motor in test tank started it it's idling at about 950 to 1000 but all other symptoms the same going to connect an external gas tank tomorrow and see if there is any change

???-----Well, crankcase compression is NOT the same as cylinder compression.---Read post #14 again.----You can have poor , next to zero compression in one or more of the 6 separate crankcases.----And still show excellent compression in the cylinders.-----A much mis-understood concept of 2 stroke outboards.

I said it didn't look like anything the coast guard uses not that's not a ex-coast guard boat.... I even complimented the walk around deck.

People read comments and miss take the body of the message.

Good luck with your motor.

How do I test crank case compression
