i have a VRO model 40 hp.

i am having a real problem removing the shift linkage below the starter to remove the lower unit. i removed the starter and i see the linkage but can't figure how to release the shift rod. it seems the bolt holding the vertical rod is on the engine block side.
do i have to remove the carbs to gain access to the linkage???

Sounds like you have the split type coupler on your shift rod.Try disconnecting the linkage clevis from the 90 degree shift arm as well as the hitch pin. This will allow you to thrust in on the shift arm and separate the coupler. No need to remove bolt facing the block.Just make sure you leave a couple of lower unuit bolts made up until the rod is disconnected or it can get into a bind.

Thanks for the Info

I did get it removed after my post by removing a lock pin from the horizonal shaft on the shift linkage side of the engine and sliding the horizonal shaft to the pivot side until the shift rod dropped.
