Hello iBoats Community,

My Name is Phillip Smith and I am wanting to redo my 1987 Cajun sport boat.

Background:
I was given the boat as my high school graduation present from my dad. He bought the boat the year i was born, so it has a lot of sentimental value. When I took possession the boat had been sitting for 5 years. needless to say it had seen better days. The hull was still it good shape it was mostly cosmetic issues. I did some maintenance on the motor and she fired right up for me. Since then i have had it on the lake every summer fishing as much as i could.

About the Boat:
Its a 1987 Cajun with a 115 Mariner inline 6 engine. It has 2 live wells front and rear. the floor around the captains chair is rotten and the fiberglass is dull and dingy.

The Issues:
Because it sat for so long the wood floor is rotten in places, it was just recently became bigger problem and i would like to fix it. I have gone through the forums and found a lot of good info on what i need to do. I plan on removing the top fiberglass body so i can get to the rotten wood and replace it. The questions i have is should i go ahead and do the whole floor. and is there a stronger material that i can use as a substitute instead of marine wood. I also plan to polish the fiberglass during the restoration so i can get it back to its previous appearance.

Improvements:
Since I mainly use the boat for its fishing purposes what modifications could i make that would make the boat more functional as a bass boat. I normally fish with a partner so i would like to leave the passenger console. and in its show room state the back seats have fold down covers to extend the rear fishing platform.

The Goal:
I want to have the boat in like new condition. I would like to show my dad that i made the most of what he gave me and enjoy many summers on the lake fishing it my childhood boat with friends and family.

Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. And more in depth instructions on what i need to do would be great.

Whats up Phillip? as a newbie myself jumping into a project I found that the best to find what I want to do has already been done all you have to do is search the forums. There are a ton of amazing boats on here and everyone seems willing to lend some advice. My only suggestion is when the project gets overwhelimg (and it will) stop, walk away take a break. The boat isnt going anywhere. Anyway I know i wasnt much help but my knowledge of boats stops at they float on water. All right man get after it and keep posting pictures. Later Dater

Thanks for the response. Ive been digging through forums since I joined and the amount of help that ive gotten cant be measured, but my general thought was that i could use my own post to compile all the information in a single place so it would be easier to reference. I want to start soon but with the early spring im dying to get out on the lake and fish. but i dont want to put this off to much longer but i would like to be able to get to my fishing holes this summer. So in short compiling all the helpful comments and suggestions should help speed up my project. but ill probably break the restoration into steps so i can still get some use out of the old girl this summer.

Here is food for thought.

Rotten wood starts from within. Your plan to remove the cap is excellent and it will provide you the chance to see what is below the deck.

Properly prepared plywood will last a LONG time and it is the most cost effective for a deck. The previous wood lasted since 1987 and if prepared properly the new wood will last longer.

You need to know this is not a small undertaking and it is not cheap either.

You can try to polish the old finish however, it will still look faded (but shiney).

Bob is right on! I took the cap off of my American, and it made all the difference in the world. If you have to disconnect wires, I would Label every wire twice with a marker. Lastly what worked for me when I rebuilt my Mustang and Dart, every time i removed a nut and bolt, I put them in plastic bag and used a sharpie to label where they came off. Worked great from my project.... so far at least.
