Hey all, long time just scored a new project so here goes my thread. I recently picked up a 1987 trophy 2160. 3.0L OMC with cobra outdrive. It sat in a yard for around 8 years prior to me picking her up. The story goes she has very low hours... no hour meter to prove it though. She has a solid hull, no dock rash to speak of, and a hopefully solid engine. Purchase was conditional on getting her started and up to operating temp. She passed, so four new trailer tires and a trip permit from the DOL later and she followed me home! She came with a tandem axle caulkins trailer and three pen electric down riggers.

I have been doing some research and have started coming up with a list of things that need to be done.
new impeller
clean gas tank
new shift cable ( i have done alot of reading on the adjusments and the thrashed gearsets. I plan to purchase a set of the midnight wolf adjustment jigs)
clean out the cuddy/remove old mildewed carpet/monkey fir
go through trailer brakes
rewire trailer
wire up down riggers
refinish all wood

I guess thats enough for my first post.
Go Hawks!

Lots of Great Guys here with a Lot of combined Knowledge. Just don't be surprised if you find a LOT more issues. I HIGHLY recommend you perform a thorough inspection of the transom, motor mounts and every nook and cranny of the deck. If she sat outside in the elements for that long there's a very good chance that she's gunna need a LOT of work below deck. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for the heads up! I am sure there are many more issues i will run into, just like you say. My main goal off the get go is to reseal/bed all the through hull/deck fixtures to keep her nice and dry. While I am at it I will make sure to do a thorough inspection of all the hull from a water damage/rot perspective.

So was she covered sitting in the yard? As WOG stated, there's probably going to be a lot of ugly beneath the deck. Good luck and post more pics when you get a chance.

Welcome!!

I would do the inspections first. No need to worry about fittings if the floor has to come up.

Ive always had a fondness towards the hardtop trophy's,..no so much for Bayliners though. My uncle had a 28' trophy that began some of my fishing history as a child in Norwalk Ct. IRRC the trophy's have FG decks with sufficient bleed down porting,... so if your lucky and the boat was stored properly, the sub-structure may not be too bad. Good luck and I look forward to following your progress. Welcome to Iboats.

Nice find and good luck! It'll be rewarding, taxing, fun and horrible work at times.

I'd poke around the insides really thoroughly as well, inspect everything you can take out and check the electrics properly when you're at it!

Good looking float man. I myself love old Bayliners. They were however not the best built boat in the 80s. The 3.0 engines are tough powerplants. The cobra will preform well if you keep your idel slow and get the adjustments close. I love the fact the water pump in that leg can be swapped in like a half hour. Check your bellows closely. If I am not mistaken getting the transom sheild off that setup isnt that difficult. Will let you see the lower section first hand. I tried core sample of mine but didnt get to the rotting section in the lower middle part of the key.
