1987 AQ131D Can't hand turn crank

There is a Volvo engine in a junk yard near me in NJ. I picked up the next to last engine there for $300.
There supposedly is a slight difference in the boat valve material, otherwise the automobile head is the same.

Hey Dennis and others. Not sure where I'll go from here. I'm going to take the head and exhaust manifold to the local boat guy and see what he thinks. I don't know if the corrosion inside the #4 port on the head can be re welded then bored and the manifold is what I think as extreme corrosion inside Then knowing if the guides are ok, can I reuse the remaining valves and is the exhaust valve seat really $178 each? Also, I think there should be a plate separating the upper and lower exit on the end of the manifold. I have found a picture showing the end yet. And the guy i got the boat from who is my neighbor and friend(still), called to see if I had taken the boat out yet. Haha. He's coming up in the a.m. to see for himself. He wouldn't stop apologizing. Hi Boaters. I found this on a thread from 2004 comparing the different heads. So it looks like a aq125B would be a straight swap out for my aq131d head or a aq151 and change out the cams. Does that look right? Here's a link to the entire thread. Question: is the casting stamps how the different heads are identified? Meaning how do you tell if a head stamped 1000531 is from a aq125b, aq131 or a aq151 or does it matter? Thanks again, Matt.

Well I went to look at another AQ131D motor on Saturday and it was only slightly better than mine and would need a lot of machining like mine. He also had an AQ125B. The exhaust manifold exit port was crumbing and the bolts were stripped so I couldn't get it off to see into the head. So at this point I'll save my money and just tinker with the boat until I find something that I can use. Thanks for the input and I'll update this if something changes. Thanks again, Matt

If you're looking at rebuilding the motor AND the deck (probably stringers and transom also), then you're talking about considerable amount of work and money. Realistically, you won't recover the money that will need to be invested. Once it's fixed up, it's still an old boat. However, many of us have rebuilt our boats knowing that it's not a wise investment as far as money is concerned, but you have a great boat to enjoy. There can be a tremendous amount of enjoyment in a project like this. Just wanting you to go into this with your eyes open with realistic expectations.

wow, that's pretty rough. From the moment I bought my boat it was a near straight uphill leaning curve ! After paying over $200 for a used heat exchanger I scoured kijiji & craigslist weekly looking for parts as replacements are so expensive. I found a complete motor for mine. It was a tear out when the guys boat was rotten for $300.00. Turns out he left it outside and it was corroded from the inside out from the moisture. The exhaust is obviously marine specific as is the head exchanger and the camshaft on your head. Besides the electronics ( dist,& alt ) The rest of it ( engine wise ) is pretty common Volvo stuff. As others have stated I would look over the rest of the boat carefully before proceeding. I have over $2k in parts alone on a boat I paid $3k for and its not worth $5k by any means LOL

Hello Boaters. I picked up a couple of things in the last week or so. I have been patiently looking for another 531 head and a decent exhaust manifold to go back on my aq131d. I found a 531 head on ebay that was told came from a running motor. #4 exhaust port has had a repair but had no pitting or material loss like the one I had to start with. I paid 102.50+ 40 shipping. And yesterday I picked up a galvanized exhaust manifold that looks awesome. Had not seen a galvanized one so I was stoked to find it. Paid $170 for it. So I still think I haven't gone past the break even to losing money point on this boat. Anyway I have a question on gaskets. Is the Volvo Brand gaskets the only ones to use. I've read various opinions. Thanks, Matt. Here's some pics of the new pieces.

Which gaskets are you asking about, exhaust or all the rest.
If I recall, I had to buy gaskets and seals from three different sources to get them all.
For exhaust, I have Autozone supplied individual port gaskets, I think they are regular Felpro automobile. The rubber tube from exhaust manifold to transom is from Sierra.

Hi Dennis. I'll need intake exhaust head and valve cover. So you think automotive gaskets on the intake and exhaust. I'm not positive, but I think i need marine gaskets for the head?? any idea? Thanks,Matt.
