1987 88hp sp lower unit removal

Help,
I think my water pump is bad, I am trying to remove the lower unit. I can not get the shift linkage disconnected. Help!! Is there a trick I am missing?

The shift linkage disconnect is under the bottom carburetor. It's easier to see and access if the engine is in reverse gear.

remove air silencer, makes it easier to see.
