I recently bought a 1987 6hp evinrude. It has a primer instead of a choke.
It starts fine with the primer pulled out and it will run ok if the primer is pulled out just a little. If I push the primer knob in completely it will stall. I have rebuilt and cleaned the carb and put new O rings in the primer, but no difference. Any ideas

Fuel must flow thru the fixed brass high speed jet that's located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber. Solvent really doesn't do a good job cleaning that jet and it is advisable to clean it manually with a piece of single strand wire. If you haven't already cleaned it, do so.

Joe,
thanks for the reply. I have already cleaned that the main seat and all other orifices with a thin wire. No difference.

Is fuel actually flowing into the float chamber of that carburetor?

Joe,
I had that same question myself, but the bowl was full when I took the carb off. Also of course when I rebuilt the carb I replaced the float seat and valve. Also took the fuel pump apart to check for a pin hole, but it looked good. Wnen I put everything back together; same problem. This one really has me stumped.
Thanks for your help. I need it.

With that primer knob out somewhat, you're actually bypassing the carburetor and injecting fuel directly into the intake manifold area. Push that knob in and that fuel flow is cut off, leaving the carburetor responsible for the fuel flow. Unfortunately that leads me straight back into the carburetor but without actually being there, I have no idea what is being overlooked.

Ok, this is a new to you motor.
The fuel pump has been apart at least once, by you. Perhaps the original owner also had it apart.

The pump may not be leaking/bad. However it is possible it is assembled incorrectly. In which case you will have almost No fuel pressure.

If this is the small square pump this link may help:
