Toward front of engine ?. or rear?.. Now that's the kind of info I'm looking for.. Thank you.. I'll go to the engine shop and look for myself. If I find it, I can take it home (and scrap it), and save myself $300.. Thank you very much. JG

Just saying... for ~7k you can have a complete drop in engine with new everything delivered to your house with a 3 year warranty. Or hunting around used you should be able to find a good runner for ~1.5k. (Those are north east prices. May be cheaper or more expensive elsewhere.) You're looking ~3k to diy it and replacing everything that you should be replacing. I never thought 3.0s were worth rebuilding considering how many are out there for cheap...

Bondo.. Thanks.. and Pmt133, I got into this rough '87 Four Wins 160, on a lark to get back on the water after about 30 yrs, and paid a whopping $400 w/ trailer, hoping to spruce it up for another ? $2000 tops.. so much for that idea.. lol.. (I've been telling my friends, (when they ask why), that I bought it by accident..) oops.. lol.. Upholstery chewed by critters, hull dull, but motor 'looked' nice, (although dirty).. Being new to chasing marine engines, particularly the 3.0, almost everyone I've spoken to about this, (including on the East coast), is telling me 'runner engines' and un-cracked blocks are scarce these days. (And certainly not putting a $7000 new motor in the $400 boat, if you get my drift). (and any 'drop-in I find out east, will certainly cost a bundle to ship)(I'm in Portland, Or.) But being an engine mechanic (antique aircraft engines), I'm actually enjoying learning about all this. (Took me two weeks to understand the manifold and riser, etc. lol.) I actually now have most of all the rebuild stuff here already. (Obviously premature to learning what I actually had here).. (I'm 90% that the block AND the manifold are cracked).. Gaskets, o-hauled carb, new fuel pump, new water pump, o-hauled head, (I may have been premature on that one, but only $250). -IF- the case was good I was going to have the crank turned. (?$400?).. (Rods need prob -.020, but mains will polish out). Still on the shopping list: Piston & rod set $400, timing gear set $75, (I had a junk 'Celeron' cam gear), Main brgs actually look usable, but new set $40, Rod brg set $20, Ring set $20. So ? about $580 additional from what I have on hand.. and my labor. Oh.. and about $300 for the block check and new cam bearings and check line bore on mains, again..IF usable).. But yesterday, I may have also found a runner engine for sale.. Should hear today if it's still available. Don't know price yet.. so..? Thanks again all for info..

buy a rotten mid-late 90's bayliner and get the whole post 1991 3.0 with the upgraded 1992 and later Gen 2 drive. if you do it right, you buy the whole thing for $500, pull the motor/trans/controls and then sell the trailer and some parts for the $500. then you are only out the hull disposal fees.

Gave that a passing thought.. Really don't want to go thru disposing the boat.. and concerned about the late ignition wiring, harness and all, changing years like that. I don't know enough to mess with that.. BUT.. If I had seen a deal like that anywhere, I'd be tempted. I also don't want to travel more than a couple hundred miles or less to get it. (I'm old, very busy, and short on time to work on this).. (Not to mention, I get cranky when I run in to s*** I don't understand..lol).. AND I now have to assume if a boat like that is going for that cheap, the motor HAS to be suspect.. (Like the one I just bought).. I keep my eyes open tho'.. Thanks
