Hello Everyone!

First off I'd like to say that I wish I had found this forum BEFORE I bought this boat. I wasn't sure if I liked boats, or whether I just liked the "idea" of boats. For the first few days of my new boating career I knew for sure that I just liked the "idea" of having a boat.

I bought her pretty cheap (under $800, boat and trailer) and she does run. The deck was noticebly soft around the stern, starboard side and over the gas tank. I thought " a couple of hours, new carpeting etc...she'll be good to go!"

Before I left to go buy the boat I told my 4 year old daughter Aubrey that "Daddy was going to look at a boat and maybe buy it and that I would see her later that evening" After we brought the boat home and put it in the driveway I went into the house and told Aubrey I had a surprise for her in the driveway whe was VERY excited (picture Wife giving HUGE eye rolls here and heavy sighs in disgust...):D....I made her cover her eyes as we walked outside to the drive and when we got to the boat I told her to open her eyes! What she said was priceless and is the title for this post. She said "Daddy, that's no surprise! That's just a DIRTY OLD BOAT!!"

The next day I gave her a good wash and after removing the carpeting and sounding the deck, I was not too happy to find out the entire deck and foam were totally waterlogged. I removed seats, gunwhales at the rear and a few other items prior to starting to remove the decking, seat boxes and everything else that was attached to the hull.

I found out that the stringers were basically mush from just to the aft of the cuddy all the way back to just past the front of the motor. The motor mount was mush as well.

Fantastic new start to boating!

So after being angry for a couple of days I started to read up on how I could both fix my new boat and ward off any angry discourses with my wife over buying a junker boat that we couldn't even safely use. I found this forum and lots of great information on how to get started.

So here goes. I'm going to chronical every step so far and into the future. I have family out of state and would like them to be a part of this journey as well!

Tread, I am sure you are not the first person to have made a similar purchase. Too often we find out what we need to know after fact. You need to decide if its worth the effort to restore that boat. Likely the engine, drive and trailer are worth way more in parts than you have into it. Disposing of the hull is the PITA part of it. If you are looking for a project to work on and pass you time, then you have found it.

Good luck, and please keep the group up to date...

Treadstone, first off welcome to iboats. You will find a wealth of information here on this site, and great guys to talk to.

Pictures do help a lot. Several of us use a site such as photobucket to host all of the pictures, resize them and bring the select ones to this site.

I am doing a 1987 Searay Seville. Let me say this, don't set your goals to high or fast. The tortoise wins the race. Make your goals small ones at each step, this way you do not get overwhelmed by the project and give up. Setting a deadline will also make this project more stressful. Just keep a steady pace and you will get there.

Once again welcome and good luck.

Thanks Tink. I appreciate you being so candid.

I'm put together to be task oriented. When I have a project that is unfinished I have trouble sleeping at night because I'm thinking of what I need to get done the next day. Sometimes I come up with great ideas while i'm laying there going through the to-do list!

I'm going to have to get a photobucket account to put all of the pictures up I have taken so far.

Good luck on your boat too. Do you have a thread?

Welcome to the forum! You surely aren't the first nor the last to buy a unexpectantly rotted out boat. The bad news: repairing it is a large project and the materials are pricey. You'll be lucky to be able to sell it for what you have in it once it's fixed. The good news: done properly you'll be able to rebuild this boat better than is was when new. Also, most any low priced you'd buy instead of this one would potentially be facing the same problem. So if you fix up this one, at least you'll know what you have.

Definitely set up a photobucket account. It's one of the easier ways to host pictures. You can set it to automatically resize your photos as you upload them which saves a ton of time. The forum likes 640x480.

Lets see some pics and let us know what motor/drive this tub has in it.

Welcome to iboats TreadStone! You will find all the info and advice you need here. These guys (and gals) are great!

I did the same thing you did, with a very similar boat (check the thread in my signature). My boat had one small soft spot that I thought I could repair in an hour or so last March. ...after many many hours of work, I am just about ready to get her back in the water. I knew nothing about boat restoration and couldn't have done it without the info on this site.

Good Luck!!

SD...your boat is dang near the exact same as mine with the exception of the cuddy cabin on mine. Same color exterior, even down to the pin stripping. Our interior colors are identical as well.

Your boat came out beautifully!

Great Job.

I'll get some pictures up when I get a chance. The Wife stays after me about not spending so much time on here (and Club Sea Ray Forum). We are small business owners and she says I need to be making money in the business to pay for the work to the boat!!! I'm task oriented so I have trouble doing pieces and parts of anything...it drives me crazy until a project is completely finished.

Thanks for your motivational thread! I can see exactly where I'm at in my project!:)

Looks like you have the infamous 470 engine to deal with as well.
What are your plans for the boat?

I plan to keep her for a few years at least. I'm not even sure we're going to use her a lot in the summer, or that we're going to enjoy boating as much as we think! :D...I bought a boat because I thought I liked "boats". I have come to realize that I actually liked "the idea" of having a boat...:D

Basically, we're going to fix her up, spit shine her use her on occassion. We'll sit back at the dock and admire our hard work getting her back into shape!

Does anyone know how to post more than just a few pictures in the forum. I saw SD Seville and TinkeringWackeyOne had a ton of pictures up.....

Most of us are hosting our pictures on photobucket.com. Then you just link to them from here. You can link to up 6 per post. Photobucket is nice cuz you can resize and crop them right on their site. The iboats preferred size is 640x480.
