Hello Everyone!
First off I'd like to say that I wish I had found this forum BEFORE I bought this boat. I wasn't sure if I liked boats, or whether I just liked the "idea" of boats. For the first few days of my new boating career I knew for sure that I just liked the "idea" of having a boat.
I bought her pretty cheap (under $800, boat and trailer) and she does run. The deck was noticebly soft around the stern, starboard side and over the gas tank. I thought " a couple of hours, new carpeting etc...she'll be good to go!"
Before I left to go buy the boat I told my 4 year old daughter Aubrey that "Daddy was going to look at a boat and maybe buy it and that I would see her later that evening" After we brought the boat home and put it in the driveway I went into the house and told Aubrey I had a surprise for her in the driveway whe was VERY excited (picture Wife giving HUGE eye rolls here and heavy sighs in disgust...)
....I made her cover her eyes as we walked outside to the drive and when we got to the boat I told her to open her eyes! What she said was priceless and is the title for this post. She said "Daddy, that's no surprise! That's just a DIRTY OLD BOAT!!"
The next day I gave her a good wash and after removing the carpeting and sounding the deck, I was not too happy to find out the entire deck and foam were totally waterlogged. I removed seats, gunwhales at the rear and a few other items prior to starting to remove the decking, seat boxes and everything else that was attached to the hull.
I found out that the stringers were basically mush from just to the aft of the cuddy all the way back to just past the front of the motor. The motor mount was mush as well.
Fantastic new start to boating!
So after being angry for a couple of days I started to read up on how I could both fix my new boat and ward off any angry discourses with my wife over buying a junker boat that we couldn't even safely use. I found this forum and lots of great information on how to get started.
So here goes. I'm going to chronical every step so far and into the future. I have family out of state and would like them to be a part of this journey as well!
