Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

Now I am venturing a guess but that rig has been redone before. Was this ur doing?

Mine had been customized a lot so i decided to take her down to the bare hull and start fresh. What type of ideas ya got in mind.... I went out in left field for my restore but I went the direction I wanted. That's the beauty!

Now words of caution... you will encounter obstacles, you will become frustrated, you will end up with some sort of minor injury or if your like Jasoutside maybe a little more than minor but he's healing well. :D (all in good fun jas; truly glad it wasn't worse than it was)... and the biggest thing is YOU WILL SPEND MORE MONEY THAN YOU PLAN... so be prepared.

Dont let this dissuade you at all! Heck im 3 years in the Dry Dock and don't regret any minute worked or any penny spent. Now many MANY others have done restores in much much shorter time frames... and again that's the beauty do what you want to do for what you want to do!

When it comes to ideas the SC SS's have the same hull design... slight differences in the transom and then the stringer set up is different but you can get many good ideas and designs and help from those threads

Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

haha ... yeah im also getting married on september, so i dont anticipate spending what i would like to this year. I am taking it down to the metal, the deck you see in the pictures was definatly done afterwards. They decided to use regular wood screws to fasten down the wood, so i have already encountered fustration early on. We started to cut out around the screws with my new multi tool and then prying out the wood around.
The foam is saturated in the bow, so iam going to dig out all the foam as well. I might try to restore it to a bow rider, but i am missing a console, windshield, and the rest of the bow set up. Since we will mostly fish from the S.S. Awesomeness(haha) i might do an open set-up.

Sounds like ya got a good plan going so far. I was lucky when it came to pour foam in that mine was dry. Since ya know that its not gonna be till next year that things really get a moving... keep any eye out on craigslist for similar hull boats. Maybe you can find a project hull that you can talk the PO out of the consoles on the cheap. Windshields I also have good luck with craigslist.... Heck mine came off a 1989 Sea Arrow glasser

Hey Piece, Between crappy weather and doing some much needed yard work, we have only gotten all of the rotted screws out. Planning on pulling up the old wood this weekend. Hows the motor work going for you?

Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

I worked on getting the rest of the deck up and foam out. Man that sucked. I have to borrow a pressure washer and hose out the rest of the stuff spots. Then I guess its on to sanding.
Pics to come soon.I also see that glu vit is pretty popular on these forums so i suppose I should order some of that.

Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

Can anybody recomend a specific grit to use to sand down both inside and out? I will be using an orbital if that helps,
Thanks!

Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

Get some pretty rough stuff can't recommend any as I chose not to sand. I went with MEK for getting the adhesive from the glue off the inside but that didnt last long. I found a local guy that did soda blasting, (sand blasting would warp the aluminum; although i have hear walnut shells would work but no experience) for couple hundred bucks. It removed all the adhesive, old paint, and other tough areas. Left a layer on the aluminum to keep it nice until paint, just washed off with soap and water.

Whatever u choose or people recommend try a test patch as aluminum is pretty soft

Hey Joey, just thought I'd say howdy and join in on your project here.

Sanding the inside is a tough go for sure. For the outside you could start with 120 and finish with 220, that works pretty well.

Cheers!

Re: 1986 Sea Nymph 155

I was thinking about getting an angle grinder from harbor freight, I have seen that it is pretty popular to use with the sanding attachment. Would this be something that would work better than the orbital? will that get it to the bare aluminum? I have tried reading through all of the posts but its so much info that im getting an overload....haha. I am fishing for some different opinions or some pointers on doing this with the angle grinder. I do NOT want to burn through the aluminum hull!!! I am not even sure if i posted this thread in the right spot, So far Piece has helped me out and now Jas, thanks guys i appreciate it!

I am still a newbie to this so please bare with my annoying questions!!

Well, an angle grinder with a wire wheel gets stuff clean for sure but it'll leave very small gouges in the soft alum which is a little tough to cover with paint ya know. It kinda shows through a little.

I'm with Jas on this one... May wanna stay clear of the angle grinder... could cause some damage if you're not careful. Now I'm reading aircraft stripper works well for that kind of stuff just nasty nasty stuff. I just read it in someone's thread yesterday about where to get it... the place that they were buy it was pricing matching it from Summit. I'll post if I find it

Here is some of the latest rip out. I did get all garbage and foam out. I am going to pressure wash and get dirt out next, then get the palm sander with 160 grit and gice it a go for the inside. I just want to make sure i get all the old glue and paint off the inside. I am going to pick up Gluvit for sealing the rivets and seams.
