just had motor serviced, mechanic said it was idling too high so he turned it down. now after motor warms up it stalls and spits. i realize that when an outboard heats up it also leans out. i have since adjusted the idle up will this fix the problem?

Be sure and turn the idle timimg screw to adjust the speed..if you turn up the stop screw you will be opening the butterflies and it won't start...

It sounds like you should do a link and synch on that motor. I suspect your mechanic is too young to have experience on your motor. A service manual is the way to go.

I agree with this theory. I recently had a 85' 90hp motor come to me that had been to several well known shops in the area. By the time I got it, it was so whacked out by guess work that there was no way it was going to run. It took me all of about 15 mins to find a bad cylinder and a broken reed. They all missed the obvious because they didn't know older Merc's.

Can you tell me how you diagnosed a cracked reed? I have a new to me Merc. 90hp inline 6 I'm trying to diagnose a rough/no low idle on. Thanks!

Be careful Celdred. Many technically inexperienced outboard owners like to jump to suspecting reeds when there almost always another reason for their problem like fuel/spark.

Celdred, Stock reeds almost never fail on those motors. Rough idle happens a lot. Are the carbs clean? Is the idle pickup timing set properly? Are the carbs idle mixtures set properly? Odds are it is not the reeds....
