i am looking to purchase this. Supposedly only 25 were made with the bathroom on an open bow? Its a one owner meticulously cared for, always winterized. in great condition for age. is 3000 a fair price.

Some pics would be awesome. It's got a good powerplant. Your main concern with an older fiberglass boat is rot in the wooden components of the hull. You want a solid deck and transom. ANY soft spots in the deck are usually indicative of more serious damage in the stringers below. These things are fixable but it is a big job. Assuming no rot, $3k sounds like a very good price for a 21' with a V8.

I don't know if the Kustom Reinell came with a Mercruiser, but my 1987 Reinell 215c (NOT a Kustom), and all other 1986 and 1987 Reinells that I have seen came with OMC 260. If it came with the Merc, then all should be fine, but if not you might want to give the drive a good look over to see if it was converted from OMC, and if the conversion was done well.

Also I can purchase a 1992 Glasstream 180se for 3000, good condition but with the 4.3 litre engine.

Which one would you purchase?

and to make things even more interesting, i offered the 1986 reinell 2500 cash today and he said he would do it. hes hard up for cash i guess.

(please don't take offense) The fact that you are asking us to evaluate well used fiberglass boat based on little other than brand and model names tell me you need to do some more research before diving into buying a boat. You don't want to end up with a boat that has an obsolete drive system or a rotted hull. Brand means little to nothing in an old boat. It's all about how it was maintained. I'd much rather have a well maintained entry level boat than a neglected ultra high end boat.

If i were you, I would have someone survey the boat before handing over the money. Do a water test (if you can) and look over the boat with a fine tooth comb. As others have said, you need to be very careful of wood rot. If there are any soft spots in the deck than most likely you have stringer rot and possibly transom rot. If that is the case you are looking at another $1,000 for fix all that (if you do it yourself).

Not offended at all, I live 4 1/2 hours from salt lake city where all theses boats are at. I will make a thorough review of the boat before i purchase, but i have to have a sense of a good value(assuming the boat is in good condition) before i trek 4 1/2 hours to check out a boat. Hope that makes sense for all my ignorance. I haven't owned a boat before, my family always had one growing up and i cared and maintained for those boats, but now its time for me to buy my first boat and i am always looking for great value.

Well as far as value goes, very few glass boat brands hold their value any better than others. Coboats, Grady Whites, and Boston Whalers come to mind. Everything else is just a Chevrolet For I/O's stick with Mercruiser or Volvo. (except the Merc 3.7L 4 cylinder) and for outboards, anything is fine except Chrysler/Force.

I don't know...

I know chrysler/force outboards have gotten a bad rep. But there are a LOT of Force outboards that are still running after 20 years and on the good side of this is used parts are very abundant.

I have a 8 horse chrysler outboard in my garage and that has seriously been one of the best little outboards i have ever had. I have never had to do much maintenance other than having the water pump replaced and it just keeps on running.

I also used to have a chrysler 120hp (early 70's before force) and it was a good motor as well. The nice thing about them is they are very simple. The bummer part about older chryslers is not many parts available.

If i had the choice between a johnson or chrysler, i would choose the johnson hands down, but I do think the chryslers/force are not as bad as people make them out to be.

I am NOT saying that Force outboards are bad. Nor am I saying that even OMC I/O's are bad. I am telling a newbie boat owner to avoid them because they are no longer made nor fully supported with parts and this situation will only continue to get worse. I personally think Chrysler outboards look really cool and I'd love to have one on a second boat or something to beat around.
