are you sure the tiny idle calibration holes in roof of carb are 100% clean as a church ****-house? what about the tiny tiny idle pickup tube. a syringe with alcohol is all thats needed on these if its not a total nightmare. not much synch n link accept as you said get cam roller to just start opening at hash mark. no timing really to adjust, although this might be the year OMC experimented with a timing pointer but still kinda not needed. compression is fine? hot 7/16'' spark? a power pack can break down under load but spark at the plugs, which is why they want you to use a load adapter to cranking volt test it
I'll double check the idle calibration holes.
The is a pointer that's mounted on the starter, but with it being cdi, is there really much that can be adjusted?
You've got me thinking maybe it's the powerpack though. I swapped powerpacks with an extra from a parts motor I had and it made no difference so I just assumed it was something else but in all honesty I have no history on that powerpack so maybe they're both duds.

although possible its both packs being bad, its starting to sound like a charge or sensor (trigger) issue now but only way to tell is to cranking volt test each with a DVA adapter. that takes all the expensive guesswork out. you also can rule out the power pack with those 2 tests, or find out it is indeed the culprit. no timing adjustment on these.

Thank you sir. Would you happen to have a resource for how to complete the cranking volt test?

lots of utubes on the subject of voltage testting and voltage drops.
Yeah thanks, I've watched a couple but have only really found electric start videos...
I'm not sure how I'm going to do the DVA test when all of the wires coming from the powerpack terminate into a wiring harness.

I guess I'll have to keep digging in the YouTube library for some pull start videos, and maybe I'll have to cut into and splice wires coming from the power pack?
This is a good learning experience at least. :)

So an update from the owner:

"I used the motor on 4-5 occasions over the weekend for maximum 5 minutes at a time...the motor runs well in the open water and does not bog out when it is running full out. The challenge is it does bog out consistently at low speeds and when reducing rpms to shift or when coming into dock the boat.
It starts ok, but not well or consistent overall."

I'm hoping maybe some low speed needle adjustment and idle speed screw adjustment will help, thoughts?
I'll be up next week to give it a go myself...

You can certainly hope but probably a dirty carb. I showed someone once what a dirty carb looked like and the couldn't tell that it was dirty.

Doesn't take much.
