1986 Johnson 30hp Compatible Power Head

I need to replace the power head on my 1986 30hp Johnson. Since the one I have has tiny pieces of metal in the top cylinder and the crankshaft only turns about 1/2 way by hand diagnosing the problem was real easy this time. Does anybody know if a 1989 30hp power head would fit or what year/motor horsepower range of power heads would be compatible with my 1986 30hp Johnson?

A 1989 30 hp will work.I swapped my 86 with an 89.The flywheel,charging system underneath,and the carb were the only differences I found and I just swapped all of those parts from my 86 onto the 89. I have since blew the 89 and am now working on a 1986 25hp with a bad lower i purchased.My 86 30hp also had the lower from the 89 on it.I will be putting the 89 30hp lower on my 86 25hp upper now.I knew nothing of outboards a few years back but being broke and having a fishing addiction changed that quickly

20 25 28spl 30 are all the same up to the new etec's. Ive swapped 30 powerheads from early 2000's on early 80's 25hp and vice versa. Only difference our the carbs and electronics but they swap around so put ur electronics on the new powerhead and its good to go
