I bought this cheap tach and it says it's running 1150-1200 RPM at idle and I know that can't be true because it sounds like it's going dead any moment and when you put it in gear it quits. Are you supposed to divide by 3?

Oh yes that looks like the China knockoff of the Tiny Tach. I don't know about that version, but the Tiny Tach has the ability to change the tach for the type engine it is used on. So check to see if you can program it via a menu for your engine. Then post the RPMs. JMHO!

I have a 92 DT 85, that I had to manual choke at cold start, as the solenoid would not engage it. It is only a elctromagnet and they hardly ever fail....real simple old technology. Most likely its you switch at the controller. I found a you can buy complete controllers ( used ) for what they want for a new switch.
Works great, just push in key to engage choke, turn, and WHAM, she fires right up

GM, it is set to 2 STROKE 1 cylinder. I started it earlier and sometimes it would go down to 1050 rpm but yet it sounded like it was about to go dead.

Eddie, I just found out about the auto choke by pushing in the key. Newbie here and felt stupid after finding that out. So now it's just dying when I put it in gear only when it's in water, hopefully last thing. Runs great after you get going, doesn't miss, runs smooth, just seems like it idles too low.

Why 2 STROKE 1 cylinder? Isn't your engine multiple cylinder? That could be the issue. JMHO!

The only selections I have are:
2 strokes 1 cylinder
1 stroke per cylinder
1 stroke 2 cylinder
