Having problems getting my starter to engage. I have a dead short from the rectifier. If I remove the ground wire from it, all seems to be fine, except the starter spins but will not engage... should the ground wire from the rectifier have power?? never seen this before... first time trying to get it started this year.. stopped last year and all was fine... Thanks, jc

Re: 1986 Force Rectifier

Your motor is equipped with a circuit breaker under the cowling, that if the recifier is shorted, will trip. It is about 1/2" by 1" in size.
So I don't think this is your problem.
Check that all terminals and connectors are shiny clean. The best tool I've found to clean them with is a dremmel drill with a brass rotary brush. After they are shiny clean and back together, coat them with liquid tape to keep them that way.
I think you'll find a weak battery, or the bendix atop the starter is sticking. This is easily fixed using WD40. Soak it down with thge WD40, and werk the worm gear up and down the starter shaft and keep spraying it, until there is no more black goo comming off the worm gear. This is a very common problem on any worm bendix starter in the marine environment.
On the rectifier, two posts are labled with a one of these symbols; ~
These are are comming from the stator, which puts out A/C voltage. the other two posts are the converted voltage D/C, which is what all your electrics, electronics and battery require.

12 footer.. OK, great idea, I'll give that a try.. one other thing... on the rectifier, should the ground wire be hot? I did locate that this wire (ground) was causing a possitive ground. This should always be dead, due to being a ground correct..? Thanks, for your insite.. I'll go and clean all connections....
