1986 Evinrude 60 hp oil injection

Just bought 86 Evinrude 60 hp. Motor sat for about 5 years. The guy I bought it from was told to disconnect oil lines and run premix. Is this a good injection system? What should I do to get it back in opperation?

Welcome to iboats. I couldn't help you on your first post.From what I have read here there was a three wire setup that was replaced by a four wire setup or something like that that the pros preferred. Do a search on VRO connections and it should clear some of it up for you. I am not familiar with them as i premix my fuel. A good OEM manual will save you a lot of time and money.

If you want to reactivate the VRO, you first need to make sure everything is still there, that the wiring has not been cut, and that the VRO pump and oil tank are there. You really need a service manual specific to your engine to identify parts and to perform the necessary checks. Having the VRO not working means the engine gets no oil so a mistake in the reactivation process can cost you an engine. Early VROs could be problematic. If it were mine, I'd continue to premix.

For information on how the VRO operates, go to the FAQ section here, part F. about the VRO.<br /><br />I would not recommend re-connecting a 19 year old VRO, put the new improved version and the oil tank updates on the motor.

Junk the original VRO. They were questionable back then. They've been updated a few times since their intro.
