Did someone say free Boat!!
I know, I know, it?s a little too early to get all excited about a FREE Boat??But I have been lurking the forums for about a month now and watching a ton of videos on the upcoming ?process? and feel it is a reasonable project to undertake IFFFFF the motor will start and everything is on the up and up mechanically. This is my first post here on iboats I hope to be able to stay with the project but with a 2 year old and 2 month old at home it may be a long term project. I will post random updates here and there whenever i get an chance to make some progress

Heres the story,
So I Got the boat from an older lady (friend of family) that wanted to get it off her property. It was her Son?s boat when he was in high school 16+ years ago. They used it a few times after he went off to college and what not, she always maintained it and winterized it all that good stuff. She says about 8 to 10 years ago (she thinks) she decided she was done boating and parked it beside her garage on her lake property and walked away?..

Fast Forward to Beginning of March
She hands me a signed title and directions to the property: Free Boat for the taking??.. No Returns. I said cool sounds like an awesome deal, I like projects and the base price was right where I like it. She hasn?t been to the property in years and has no idea what condition it is in other than the rear seats are bad because the cover had developed a rip over the years, and the tires may need replaced on the trailer.

I load the truck up with a few tools and headed out to pick it up. Heres what the trip produced.

Once the snow and ice melted the floor crumbled under me feet......I haven't been able to dig at it to see how much is bad. I would guess by the amount of time it has sat and the condition of everything that was exposed I will probably be doing a complete rebuild. I took it to my storage garage across town and haven't had much time to stop in and investigate. This is my first boat so not sure what to look for on the engine as signs of neglect any help is greatly appreciated. I will be changing the oil and bypassing the fuel tank when I attempt to get it up and running. Currently there is no battery So I will need to pick one up soon.

These are the things I do know:
Floor Is extra Soft- Needs replaced
Ski Locker Bulk Head is Rotted
Engine is not seized - Bumped the starter with a screw driver
Pulled Carb and rebuilt it
Has some type of brown varnish type goo in intake manifold- had same goo in carb (Old Fuel?)
Gauges Light Up with Key-no crank

More PIcs

You got your self a project, but it won't be cheap to fix. The engine might run after sitting that long without issues but I wouldn't bet on it. Another thing you want to do before you tear into it is go to the DMV and find out what taxes are owed on it. You could have it all fixed up and go to get it licensed and find out there is a bunch owed.

Put some oil down the cylinders and turn it over.
Put a water hose to the engine and try to find out if the block is cracked.

Good luck I'll be watching

:welcome: Like alldodge said you've certainly got a project on your hands. More than likely you'll be looking at a complete gut and rebuild. Seeing the ski locker bulkhead rotten more than likely indicates the stringers and transom will be rotten as well. Before you get to involved in the resto I would make sure all the documentation is up to snuff, and the engine and out drive are serviceable. As to your first question yes that brown stuff is varnished/bad gas. Clean or replace all the fuel lines and filters as well as the tank, and your carb rebuild will get you on the right track.

You've come to the right place for good info and support on your rebuild. I'll be tagging along, and good luck.

Thanks for responses.....Everything appears in order with the title but I will for sure check it out before I get to carried away, she is a friend of the family and although it was her sons boat it has always been in her name. Im not 100% sure but, we dont pay yearly taxes on boats in Ohio that im aware of. At least I haven't dealt with anything for my Jetski of that nature. Im looking forward to getting some more progress done it drives me nuts that I dont have much time currently to go work on it. The Unknowns are killing me, especially since i keep checking the forum and see all these other posts on rebuilds. I have undertaken a few other major projects this will be my first boat tho. I mainly stick with 4 wheeled rebuilds but I like any challenge.

Here are some of my old projects

Keep updated with pictures and all that you have done. I have the same exact model that I think I am about to tackle and it looks about in the same condition. Interested in what you find.
