Well, after a couple more hrs of tinkering, I've come to the conclusion that it just may be the vro pump.
Does anyone have an idea how long one of theses vro pumps will last before needed replacement or rebuild? It's a 1986 engine. I know the previous owner so I'm going to ask him if the vro has ever been rebuilt

Well, I'm reporting back with an update.
I've purchased a Sierra non vro fuel pump and deleted my vro. The switch over wasn't too bad of a job.two hr.job.
I also installed a new primer bulb and lines from tank.

Zero smoke, starts right up with the touch of the key(it's never done that).
My opinion of VRO....for the lakes I go to up here in saskatchewan, especially mid week, there are times when I never see another boater all day...,so a break down could spell a small likelihood of danger.
Call me old school but I know the less complication, the better when it comes to boating, just too many things with the vro that can go bad.
The simplicity of the old style fuel pump can't be beat

I like the idea of Premixing the Gas, as I know the engine is getting the Oil it needs, until I forget to...

Did you install the regular pump right over the pulse port on the intake manifold ?----Part # of the fuel pump you installed ?

If you have a 4 Stroke or a 2 Stroke where oil is in a Separate Tank, as the main Propulsion, then the Kicker should be a 4 stroke, that will insure the Kicker will have access to enough fuel to make it back, as a 2 Stroke Kicker will need Premix Gas, and the main fuel supply for the out-of-commission Main Engine won't have premix feeding it.
