I have a 86-87' 50hp Merc, its a 3cyl , 2-stroke. I had the boat and motor for 2 years, i had the lower unit serviced and a new impeller put in. I was trying to do it myself the other day and I could not seperate the lower unit from the mid-unit. It would drop about 1/2 to 1" give or take then would totaly stop with no signs of comming off 
. I have water cycling through the motor but not out as much i want..so i want to service the impeller. I tried everything, I heard theres a nut or something that connects the shift shaft underneath the carb. I seen something and it looks like it has a torque head on it. I dont know if thats what holding it on. Im hoping it didnt freeze up in the P.H. but it slid down that inch or so, so im thinking it didnt. But i pulled all the nuts and bolts out. Shes pumping water but it doesnt have a lot of pressure behind it, and its warm but not hot enough to have to rip your hand away.
